My name is Madelen, and I have volunteered with FugleAdvokatene since autumn 2024. Ever since I was little, I have cared deeply about animal rights, especially animals that most people consider less worthy. When I heard that FugleAdvokatene needed more rehabilitation homes, I did not hesitate to get in touch.

I had no experience with birds, so there was a lot to learn. Welcoming my first patient was both frightening and exciting. From there, the learning curve was steep, and I have challenged myself with the help of wonderful mentors. The sense of achievement when you finally manage something that seemed daunting, and the happiness when a patient is ready for release, make it all worthwhile!

Alongside my usual patients, a domestic pigeon came to live with me! At first she was understandably rather suspicious of me, and she seemed to think my hands were the scariest things in existence. But I was determined to give her the time she needed. Over the following months, she grew increasingly comfortable with me, and the difference from the first day was huge. She no longer runs away from my hand: she accepts gentle strokes on her head, closes her eyes and makes contented little sounds.

My time with FugleAdvokatene has been demanding, but also very rewarding. I look forward to what comes next! Love from Luna and me ❤️
